Which motorcycle licence is right for me?

Confused about the different types of motorcycle licences?

This guide will take you through the various motorcycle licences available, how to obtain them, and what each entitles you to.


Before you begin though, you will need to get a provisional driving licence and complete your compulsory basic training (CBT). You can find out more about those here.

Licence Category: AM

What You'll Need: 

  • Age 16+
  • Provisional licence.   
  • CBT certification (valid for 2 years)
  • L plates.


Restrictions:    

  • You can ride a moped or scooter up to 50cc/below 4Kw, with a top speed not above 28mph, displaying L plates.
  • If you train for and pass the DVSA theory test, module 1 and module 2 tests for category AM mopeds/scooters you do not need to show L plates or ever renew your CBT.

Licence Category: A1

    What you'll need:

  • Age 17+
  • Provisional licence or full car licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement.
  • CBT certification (valid for 2 years)
  • L plates.                


Restrictions:

  • You can ride a light motorcycle, up to 125cc/below 11Kw, category A1 displaying L plates.
  • If you train for and pass the DVSA theory test, module 1 and module 2 tests for cat A1 motorcycles you do not need to show L plates or ever renew your CBT.

Licence Category: A2

  What you'll need:      

  • Age 19+              
  • Provisional licence or full car licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement.
  • CBT certification


Restrictions:

  • You MUST pass DVSA theory test, module 1 and module 2 bike tests for middleweight motorcycles, category A2.
  • You can ride motorbikes with at least 395cc.
  • A power output 20kW to 35kW.
  • A power to weight ratio not more than 0.2kW/kg
  • The motorbike must also not be derived from a vehicle of more than double its power.
  • You can also ride motorbikes in category A1.

Licence Category: A

 What you'll need:

  • Age 24+
  • Provisional licence or full car licence with provisional motorcycle entitlement.
  • CBT certification.

Restrictions:

  • You MUST pass DVSA theory test, module 1 and module 2 bike tests for unrestricted motorcycles, category A.
  • You can ride motorcycles over 595cc.
  •   Motorcycles   with a power output over 50kW.
  • Motor tricycles with a power output more than 15kW.
  • You can also ride motorcycles in categories A1 and A2.

Direct, Progressive, and Restricted Access

It is possible to gain your licence to ride a more powerful motorcycle quicker and at a younger age by following either a Direct (DAS), Progressive, or Restricted Access route.
