Check out our list of frequently asked questions to learn more about motorcycle training and the courses we offer.
You must complete a Compulsory basic Training course (CBT) before you can legally drive on the road. In order to take your CBT you must first obtain a provisional driving license. Remember, you will also need motorcycle insurance to legally ride your bike or scooter on public roads once you have obtained your CBT.
Your CBT licence earns you a DL196 certificate, which provides you with different privileges depending on your age. Check out our CBT article for a full breakdown. After obtaining your CBT you have two years after completion of your training to graduate to a motorcycle license.
All motorcycle licences allow you to ride without "L" plates, carry passengers, and use motorways. The main difference between motorcycle licences is the size of bike you can legally ride on public roads. For a full breakdown view "Which motorcycle licence is right for me article."
To obtain a full motorcycle licence you must sit a Motorcycle Theory test. You can do this directly with the Driving Standards Agency here. This is not required to obtain your CBT.
Yes, if you have a current in date UK photocard licence (provisional or full) this serves as your provisional entitlement to ride on completion of your CBT. You may also use a DVLA registered EU driving licence.
Progressive Access - Designed to provide young riders with gradual access to motorcycles based on engine size and power rating. This system enables riders with at least two years of experience on a lower-category motorcycle licence to advance to the next level by completing a practical test—without the need for an additional theory test. More Info.
Direct Access - Designed for riders aged 24 and over who wish to obtain their unrestricted Category A licence, allowing them to ride bikes of any size and power. The process begins with completing a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training), typically on a 125cc bike. DAS training then transitions to a 600cc (or larger) motorcycle. More Info.
Restricted Access - Designed for riders under 24 years old who wish to obtain a full motorcycle licence in a lower category. While similar to the Direct Access Scheme (DAS), the key difference is that the licence you gain through Restricted Access limits the size and power of the motorcycles you can legally ride on the road.
