If you want to ride on public roads you must complete compulsory basic training, often referred to as CBT. There are exceptions to this, which you will find below. The purpose of CBT is to make sure you can ride safely on public roads while practising for your full test.
Please note, in order to take your CBT you will first need to have at least a provisional UK driving licence. If you don't already hold one of these you can apply for one here.
A CBT is a motorcycle training course with practical and theoretical elements. During training you will be continually assessed on each element, including a two hour instructor supervised road ride. As such, we would highly recommend you familiarise yourself with the Highway code before arriving for training.
CBT training can usually be completed within a day. If further training is required we are happy to discuss this with you and can provide one on one training if needed.
Bike hire and insurance is included when you book your CBT with us. We also have a selection of gloves, jackets and helmets for you to use, however please bring your own if you have them.
On successful completion of your CBT you will receive certificate DL196. This allows you to drive on public roads for up to two years. You must complete your full motorcycle test (AM, A2, A1, or A) within this time or take CBT training again.
When you come to start your training please bring your driving licence with you. You cannot take the course without this. Both full or provisional UK driving licenses are acceptable. If you have a full EU/EEA car licence you must first obtain a driver number from the DVLA.
You should also wear warm thick clothes for warmth and protection. Please wear the sturdiest pair of boots you have if you do not have motorcycle boots.
We start our day at 8.45am, when you meet the instructor and have a brief chat about the day ahead.
The CBT is broken into 5 modules as we progress through the day, we stop and have a cuppa and something to eat before venturing on to the road for a couple of hours, (if standard has been reached). If all modules are completed safely we will issue you with the DL196 (CBT certificate).
Finish time varies from around 5pm to 6pm.
Please note that all CBT training takes place at Sandyford Business Park, Sandyford Rd,Prestwick, KA9 2SY.
